The situation
The company behind one of the web’s largest publishing platforms runs a done-for-you service that builds websites for customers who want the result without the project. Delivering that at platform scale means a bench of vetted outside developers who can build to the company’s standards, communicate inside its systems, and represent the service to end customers. In 2021 I joined that bench under a signed consulting agreement, renewed through the engagement.
What I did
For two years I built and supported customer sites as a white-label developer for the service. The work ran the full range of the service’s pipeline: scoping calls with the sales team, new site builds, troubleshooting sessions on customer sites, and post-launch support handoffs. I worked inside the company’s own tooling and meeting cadence, including team syncs and account-manager coordination, so customers experienced a single seamless service.
On one engagement I also led delivery rather than just building. The project required a three-developer team, and I managed the coordination: allocating work across contributors, tracking hours against budget with the transparency the client required, and getting an approved scope expansion integrated mid-project without disrupting delivery. The project was confirmed complete by the client with both the original scope and the additional work delivered.
The engagement
Two years of continuous white-label work for a company that could hire almost anyone is its own reference. The engagement shape mattered: signed consulting agreements, integration into internal teams and processes, and repeat project assignments including team-lead responsibility. Agencies and platform companies buy reliability and communication as much as code, and that is what kept the relationship running.
