The situation
An independent music educator built his livelihood on a WordPress site selling subscription access to video lessons. He is a musician and teacher, not a technologist. He needed one person who could handle everything technical, from billing plans to broken links, so he could spend his time teaching and producing lessons.
What I did
For eleven years I was that person. The work spanned the full surface of a small subscription business:
- Subscription billing on Stripe, including restructuring plans and untangling recurring payment issues.
- Membership and content protection for the lesson library, with embed and backup arrangements for subscriber content.
- A full theme conversion when the site’s design framework needed replacing, planned and executed without disrupting active subscribers.
- Landing pages, newsletter opt-in forms, podcast support, and the steady stream of small fixes that keep a one-person business running: signup errors, login links, unsubscribe buttons.
The cadence was whatever the business needed. Some months were quiet maintenance, others were project work like the theme migration or new marketing pages.
The engagement
The relationship ran from 2014 through 2025, close to 1,400 email threads. That volume tells the real story: a solo business owner treated me as his standing technical department for over a decade. For subscription businesses of this size, the risk is rarely a single catastrophic failure. It is the slow accumulation of billing quirks, plugin drift, and unshipped ideas. A long retainer with one developer who knows the whole system is what prevents that.
